Mission: Alamo Drafthouse

by albert kamkhagi   |   September 10, 2015   |   3 Comments

Albert and I went to Alamo Drafthouse in Houston a few weeks ago, and were blown away by our experience.  Anyone who knows him, knows that he is a connoisseur of all things film, so it would only be right that he write the review.  Here he is :)!

In this new age where the in-home movie experience is taking over, movie theaters are being forced to step up their game. As a result, the concept of dine-in movie theaters is increasingly becoming the norm. Alamo Drafthouse was the first iteration of this that I had experienced some 10 years ago. Not being well versed in the history of these concepts, I am unsure if they are actually the first. I do know however, that they have been in operation for almost 20 years. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Alamo Drafthouse in Mason Park, having not been to one of these fine establishments in quite a while (we are talking years), this experience was somewhat of a revelation. In the years that I have not been, several other dine-in concepts have sprung up in the Houston area, and after this experience, I realized that no one does it quite as well as the Alamo.

(Disclaimer: All opinions in this post are mine and mine alone. I did receive compensation for this post from Alamo Drafthouse, but all opinions are my own.)

The experience at the Alamo Drafthouse is so well thought out from start to finish. One of coolest, more unique things they do is a customized  pre-show related to each feature presentation. They begin 45 minutes prior to the start of the film, and do NOT include any advertisements. Luckily we arrived to our screening of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation early enough to catch a parody reel where Ben Stiller was acting as Tom Cruise’s stunt man for the Mission: Impossible franchise. There were some pretty good laughs involved. They also have event nights that seem to be very frequent, they consist of screenings of old cult classics, “Quote-Alongs”, and something called “HeckleVision” where guests are invited to mock the film by texting comments that show up on the screen. No one does this stuff.

While the dine-in concept has been increasing in popularity, the food usually leaves something to be desired. I am a popcorn person anyway, so as long as I can have a beer with it, I’m typically happy. The food at the Alamo Drafthouse however is quite wonderful. The first thing that jumped off the page when I opened the menu was the Hatch Green Chile Burger. I am a Hatch green chile fanatic, and August is the one month out of the year where we get those delicious peppers fresh from Hatch, NM. So this being the month of August, I could only assume that I would have fresh green chiles on my burger, and I was right! The burger was also topped with queso, tortilla strips, and Dijon mustard, which is about as Texas as it gets. Needless to say, it was delicious. Lizzy ordered a Caesar Wrap, which she added grilled chicken to. I got to sneak a bite in, and thought it was pretty good too. We also ordered Fries with Parmesan and Aioli, and the Bottomless Popcorn. As a popcorn lover, I have to say this stuff is fantastic! They use REAL clarified butter, which really makes all the difference in the world. The popcorn is also served in a stainless steel bowl, which makes me feel at home for some reason.

For those who enjoy an adult beverage with their movie going experience, Alamo Drafthouse has a seemingly endless menu of beer (bottle & draft), spirits, cocktails, wine, and adult milkshakes. I was unfortunately too full to try an adult milkshake, but I will be back. They also have a cocktail pairing program, where they pair cocktails to certain movies that they show. For instance White Russians for The Big Lebowski Quote-Along, or even Bloody Marys for The Hangover when it first ran.
For those of you “Inner Loopers” like myself. I know it’s far, and leaving the loop is never ideal. But trust me, it is worth it.

I love the Alamo Draft House. I remember when there was only one location…then they added the one on Anderson Lane. And now they are going to open in San Francisco. Amazing!

I can’t wait until dine-in establishments make their way to my movie theaters. The grub served here looks tasty.
