Alaska In a Week
Alaska in a week –
It is so hard to plan out a week trip in Alaska because there are way too many beautiful places to go and so much to do. After a ton of research, I finally planned out an itinerary packed with all the things I just had to do while there. Below is a list of the towns we visited, places we stayed, and things we did. I can honestly say this is the most amazing trip I have ever taken and I dream every day of going back.
Places to stay:
Girdwood – Hidden Creek B&B: This is a seriously luxurious B&B. It was gorgeous and the people who run it are extremely kind and hospitable.
Talkeetna – Denali Overlook Inn: This B&B was incredible – the views from all of the rooms are unreal and the couple that runs it just might be the sweetest people ever. Trust me, you will want to stay in Talkeetna an extra day to be in the comfort of this Inn.
Valdez – Best Western: There isn’t much at all to choose from in Valdez as far as hotels but this Best Western was very nice and clean and also great location right on the water.
Things to do:
Girdwood – Paragliding at Alyeska Ski Resort – So much fun!!! You cannot leave without doing this – Trust me! Also visit the Crow Creek Mine to pan for gold – I loved this!
Talkeetna – Huskytown Kennel – Take a ride with Iditarod veteran huskies and learn about the timeless Alaska tradition of dogsledding. Sheldon Air Service for flightseeing – This was by far one of my favorite and most memorable parts of the trip. Holly Sheldon, the daughter of the famous Don Sheldon, runs the flightseeing service. She not only stayed late to make sure we could go up and see the mountains once the weather cleared, but even had us over for dinner afterwards – what an amazing woman!!!
Matanuska Glacier – NOVA Adventures – This is another great service for adventures and day trips. We chose to do an additional day of ice climbing because we loved it so much and being on this glacier did not disappoint!!! The glacier is located about 100 mi. from Anchorage so I suggest going on the way back from Talkeetna.
Denali National Park – SO MUCH TO DO! There are over a dozen things you can do here depending on what you like – white water rafting, ATV tours, kayaking, scenic rides through the whole park…. Heck you can do nothing here and still be in awe of everything surrounding you. I wish we had planned one more day in the park because there is just way too much to see.
Valdez – This is a beautiful but small town. Make sure you have something planned while you are here. We contacted Pangea Adventures, which is an awesome trip planning service. The first day in Valdez they took us Ice Climbing… and wow what an experience. The next two days we went on a kayaking overnight trip to Shoup Glacier. It was incredible to see the glacier up close and I can tell you I will never forget that.
