Fancy Pig in the Blankets & Jalapeno Dipping Sauce

by Lizzy W   |   March 18, 2016   |   8 Comments

The first thing anyone thinks about when planning a party is most often food – or at least that’s what I think about! One of my favorite parts about planning a dinner party or get together is how creative I get to be with appetizers. For some reason, it just come so much easier to me to put together small dishes like this recipe, than think of creative new dinner ideas. And… it’s March 18th… do you know what that means? Well, in my house it means my boyfriend is watching endless hours of basketball with friends, and I am in charge of the treats!

So, if you are looking for a fun March Madness appetizer idea that’s sure to leave people begging for more, I got you covered! I have been really behind on cooking lately, just too much going on which I know everyone can relate to, so getting back into it with these appetizer pig in the blankets was really fun. Another great thing about this recipe… it’s zero stress, and probably one of the easiest things ever to make.

I partnered on this post with Sprouts Farmers Market and True Story Foods (whose brand of hot dogs I used in this recipe), which I am really excited about because I had heard of both brands before but never tested them out. I am a HUGE hot dog person… and when I say huge I mean I could literally eat them for every meal every day, and I wouldn’t mind a hot dog scented candle next to my couch… yea I know weird but you get the idea :).

(I received this product for review purposes.  All opinions are completely my own based on my experience.)

Since I started trying eating better I have really laid low on the hot dog front. I’ve just seen too many videos of them being made, and all the crap they put into them just doesn’t seem natural. That’s why I was so excited about True Story’s hot dogs – they are made with 100% organic, 100% grass fed beef, have zero preservatives, no antibiotics or hormones, no msg, and are gluten free – could it really be?… a healthy hot dog?!?!

So, I started the recipe by thawing some phyllo dough for about 40 minutes at room temperature. Then, I lightly dusted my counter surface with flour, and laid one sheet of the dough out (which is 1/2 a package). Then, I sliced the dough along the lines already indented and again halfway through each line, so about 6 1 inch strips, then width wise through them all.

I placed a pinch of cheese on top of each strip, then the hot dog, and then rolled up. After you finish rolling them all place on a baking sheet with parchment paper, brush with eggwash and bake!

Serves: 15 mini dogs
Ingredients
  • ½ package (1 sheet) of puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg whisked with 2 tsp. water
  • 1 tbsp. melted butter
  • 1 package of hot dogs (5 dogs), I used True Story Organic uncured
  • 1 tbsp. poppy seeds or sesame seeds to sprinkle on top (optional)
  • 4 tbsp. cheese, any type, I used Gruyere and Mexican
For the Jalapeno dipping sauce
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ⅛ cup stoneground yellow mustard
  • ½ jalapeno, seeded and diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. fresh cilantro, minced
  • pinch of salt
Instructions
  1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut hot dogs into thirds, about 1-2 inches, and set aside. Dust counter surface with a little bit of flour and lay out the pastry dough. Cut lengthwise along the already indented lines, and then cut again lengthwise to create 6 total strips. Then, cut them all in thirds. You should have 18 strips of pastry dough.
  3. Then, take each strip of phyllo dough, place a pinch of cheese on it, top with hot dog on the narrow end of the strip, and roll it up to close. Seal the edges closed with a brush of melted butter. Option here to place in the fridge for about 15-20 minutes, it will make the phyllo dough puff up more.
  4. Next, place all the mini dogs on the baking sheet, brush with egg wash, top with seeds if desired, and bake for 20 min. until golden brown.
  5. To make the dipping sauce, simply whisk together all ingredients and place in a bowl.
  6. Once the dogs are done, serve with the sauce. Enjoy!

Appetizers are always the harder part of the meal prep for me. Sometimes, i take the easy route and ask my guests to bring the appetizers, haha. You did a great job with these “pigs in a blanket” recipe
